Make sure you take the long form if DC's birth certificate because they want to see a parent name that matches your official identification. If a guardian, then something official that confirms guardianship.

When DC gets their driver's license, the ID has to be turned in.

For a child, you only need social security card and birth certificate. There is no minimum age.

I would never let my child fly alone without some type of identification. Never.

My kids fly alone quite a bit (currently two teens and 9-year old) and they have never needed a passport. We have taken both passports and birth certificates with us and we never had to use them at security. Now we just leave them at home.

I'd try to get a passport if you have enough time. Otherwise a birth certificate and photo ID should be fine.

I was behind a "kid" at airport security. They asked for ID and he just said he was 17. That was all. He went through. Seems like a big loophole but..

Hasn't needed one yet. I will get him one in the next few months as he will be traveling out of the country next spring, but this travel came up rather unexpectedly.

Both my my nephews flew at the age of 15 without a state issued ID. They had their birth certificates and school photo IDs and were fine. I did accompany them past security to the gate. FWIW, they flew Southwest out of Baltimore.

Just did it with my 15 year old. We had her bring her passport but she didn't need it. They don't require ID at that age, whether flying with parent or alone. (In fact we also went on a trip where my DDs got TSA Precheck entry at Dulles and the parents did not. We split up and sent the girls through the precheck line and they did not need id at all then even though we were not with them in line.

Make sure he "wears" these things.

Doesn't need a passport. School ID and birth cert. are fine. I'd add an ICE form. "In Case of Emergency" info.

My 14 year old is flying alone in just a few days and I just realized he may not have ID.

In the past, I sent him with a birth cert and checked him in with my ID, but he's not technically an unaccompanied minor at this age. He has a school ID and birth certificate but no passport.

The airline seems uncertain what he will need. Any experience out there?
