OP again. Furniture arrangements and types also welcome!

The problem is that the door is right by where the sofa is in the first link and if I put it against the wall it would be too far away from the chairs, as pictured, to form a cohesive seating area. Maybe a little coffee table in front of it? Right now I have a desk in there but it's not a nice desk and I don't really use it- I seem to use my laptop more on my lap on the couch.

OP here. You guys are awesome! Thank you. As PP said, I'm not good at this, and at the same time, when my environment is nice it makes a big difference to me!

I'm renting, and will only be here at couple years, so I'm wary of making too much investment (i.e., painting, curtains). But I work from home and spend a LOT of time in this room, so... I don't know, I guess I'd like to avoid

To be clear,
- I haven't bought the green (mint or kelly) anything yet, I was going to, but thanks for saving me!
- I don't need to use the dark area red rugs- it would just be helpful. I also have a yellow area rug, but I'm not sure it would go with the carpeting (which is a cream color). I also have a pinkish one that might work- it's a silk oriental, so really nice, and has a pattern but the overall color affect is white and light pinkish.
- The yellow of the walls isn't really mustard- but that's the closest I can call it. It's sorta a muted yellow- it's fairly light/neutral. The curtains are the same color.

Here's a picture of what the paneling looks like- the one wall is quite similar to this, though (it's actually a really nice room!),

Neutral couch with pillows that pull in the reds and greens

Olive-ish accent chairs with throw pillows that pull in the gold tones of the walls.

NO mint or Kelly green.

Why don't you get rid if the dark paneling?

I was going to make this suggestion but more along the lines of looking for rooms that have the panelling your room has (as that is the one thing that really can't be changed.) Then lift the color palette of the one you like the best.

I'm going to guess that if you want kelley green, a yellow (or any muddy color) is going to look very bad with it. You're going to need a clean white, or perky clean colors to pull off kelley green, like turquoise, kelley green and red (accent only), or kelley green, lily pulitzer pink, and lime green.

OP, I would go onto Houzz.com and search for photos of mustard color walls or whatever is the dominant color of your room. See if you can find photos that you like and go from there.

Muted yellow walls, kelly green sofas and red rugs? No, no, no! I am not being mean, PP. But you need help. No mint green either. This is all wrong. Start looking on some websites for some ideas but it sounds like the room needs to be painted and you need slip covers and no to the red rugs. What is the rest of your decor like? Look at houzz.com or apartmenttherapy.com for ideas!

I don't think I can make a judgment on this without exactly knowing the wall covering. But the combination of kelly green, dark paneling, dark rugs and mustard does not sound good to me. OP can you post a similar color so we can see what you are talking about?

I think the red sounds fine but the PPs seem to disagree. I also think Kelly green is making a comeback. Ikea has a green couch in velvet that looks good. That said if you want up to date color schemes I'd look in a west Elm, crate and barrel, cb2 pottery barn etc catalog. Gray is the new neutral and looks good with yellow, tall, light blue, any blue really, red, pink, Magenta etc. Can't go wrong with gray.

I certainly agree NOT to use the kelly green. That's way too much going on. A total clash IMO. Do you have to use the dark red rugs? How dark is the wood paneling? I would go with gray (not dove gray, but not quite charcoal) couches, with throw pillows (maybe white and yellow stylized floral motif). Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel have a good selection of those. Or maybe chocolate brown, but in either case don't use the red rugs.

What about mint green sofa and/or arm chairs? Or a soft sage?? Or will that just look grandmothery or Floridian? Or dated?

I have a dark-wood paneled room with a fireplace. The walls are a muted yellow, tending toward mustardy but more creamy. I'm thinking of redecorating the place. Would kelly green chairs and/or sofa go well? Or do I need to use other colors? I do have dark red colored area rugs I could use. Would love help!
