Use a groupon or living social deal for the cleaning, exam, and X-rays. The filling itself should only be a few hundred...but if you wait too long it will need a root canal and that will be in the thousands.

When I didn't have dental insurance last year I went to a place in Old Town that was offering a new patient special, cleaning, exam and x-ray for something like $59. I did have to pay out of pocket for a filling, but it wasn't much more than that. Check out yelp. Sometimes they're offering deals on there.

FWIW, I don't think most insurance pays for cavities.

Same poster again - actually, maybe your regular medical insurance now covers basic cleanings and xrays - you should check. Then you could just pay out of pocket for the actual filling.

Most dentists will probably allow you to make payments, just be upfront about it. We don't have dental insurance and when i take my three kids for their exams they spread it out over three months--they offered to do this without my asking.

Univ MD has a dental school that does work at a reduced rate.

Thank you. I have very sensitive teeth, so I am hoping that it is just that, but this feels different somehow. I don't qualify for low-income care, as I am above the cutoff.

If you can feel you have a cavity at this point than it means it has gone down to or is near the root. A much bigger and costly job than just filling in a small hole in the dentin or enamel.

I am in Northern Virginia. I am living paycheck to paycheck, but will have to pay out-of-pocket. Any recommendations for somewhere inexpensive that I can get this work done? I think I read somewhere that there are sometimes dental schools who will allow dental students to do work at a reduced rate. Any advice is very much appreciated!
