The idea of a rancher is a lot of land and large sprawling one story. Ramblers are the so called shit shacks, basically barely a step up from a trailer

No.

Ranch houses are anything from the small boxy one posted above to the sprawling low California ranch style.

I thought ranches are smaller than ramblers, but both are single-story.

Out of curiousity, why do folks around here call ranch houses ramblers?

I think it is a mid atlantic thing.

A rambler is what the rest of the country calls a ranch house.

Colonial is the most desired because the land is so expensive. Ramblers are too small.

We are in a similar rambler and I love it! It is seriously lacking in curb appeal but the inside is so bright and sunny and open. Love love love!

Our first home was a rambler. I loved it! We had a colonial and recently went back to a rambler.

I'd be concerned leaving open first floor bedroom windows at night.

+1.

I prefer the exterior of colonials by a mile, but I've become so used to open floor plans that I'd have a tough time living in one again. When it's time to buy a house I'll definitely be looking into the possibility of knocking down walls!

Go with the rambler! It will be easier to live in. Colonials are a waste of space. I live in one, I should know. If it's attractive, I'd choose the rambler.

We are looking at two houses. I LOVE the open floor plan of the rambler, and the downstairs that opens to a backyward. But I grew up in a colonial, and it seems more familiar. Just hate how chopped up it is. What would be your choice?
