We did Elfa shelves, and the cost of having them installed wasn't much more over just buying all the pieces. It's not hard to install, but it was faster for someone else to do it, and he was more careful about leveling and centering things than we probably would have been.

Sorry for the following snark, but if you are homeowners now, the most cost effective thing to do would be to learn how to do some minor repairs. Screwing a few wire shelves into studs is not difficult.

How big is the closet? Another option is to do something that stands on its own, like those series from Ikea or even from lowes. Ok, that is sort of do-it-yourself but I am somewhat incompetent with this stuff and I can assemble it as long as I don't have to worry about fixing it to the wall.

Ugh. Sounds like the prior owners installed it and either didn't affix the closet system to the support beams and just hammered it into drywall or they glued it on. In any case, you can call someone like the container store to come in and plan it out and do it right, or a handyman. Where is your house?
