My own parents do this and it drives me bananas. My mom called me first thing on Mother's Day to wish me a happy Mother's Day. And sends cards and gifts to both of us. We are not close at all, so it seems mostly for show or to make me feel bad in some way.

No, but they offer to take me to lunch if I'm visiting. For Mother's Day, my wife, kids and I went to visit the grandparents and my Dad and I had a friendly debate about who would pick up the tab. I finally convinced Dad that I was treating my Mother and my kids (via me) were treating their mother to Mother's Day brunch. But Dad insisted on picking up the dinner tab that night to treat my wife to Mother's Day dinner. We've had this same dance when it's been Father's Day (with my mother doing the honors instead of my father).

I don't consider it odd but I'm a gift giver by nature. I knew a guy who didn't get anything for his wife on Mother's Day because she wasn't *his* mom (though she was the mother of his kids). I thought that was odd.

My parents send gifts. ILs send cards.

My ILs given me a mother's day presents and so has my mom. My mom and my IL are going to give my husband father's day presents. But we are a gift giving type of family so I don't find it odd. But I also like my ILs and my husband likes my mom so we're less inclined to see their kind gestures as odd.

Yes they do. They LOVVVVVVVVE us, and love every excuse to show us that.

I don't think they do. Ask again next week. I try not to pay attention to what they send because all of it annoys the heck out of me.

No, but if they did I wouldn't mind.

My ILs do that. My parents do that too. I think it's very sweet if a little strange. I usually thank them profusely and assume it's a generational thing (no idea if it is or isn't but since both sets of parents do it, I sort of assumed it was).

My ILs are dead but my parents send a card to DH and me each year on Mother's/Father's Day and write a note about how great they think we are as parents. One year my mom made a little mini-photo album with snapshots of my DC that I could take to work.
