The traditional view is that drinking is big at the alpha male schools (Landon, Prep, Gonzaga) and drugs are prevalent at the artsy schools (Sidwell, Maret, GDS), but there is some of both at all schools.

That is absurd, of course there are differences, dramatic differences, in school culture. Are there SOME students who drink and use drugs in EVERY school? Very likely yes. Are drugs and drinking more prevalent at some schools? Absolutely.

Ask Genseler who is about to be clobbered in his race for Maryland Gov on what HS he thinks is a big drinking school....

It comes down to friend groups and you have little control. The good kids drink. The bad kids drink. Some dip their toes in, some go for a deep swim. You can't blame the school.

Good luck on that, OP. Don't let anyone tell you that they're kids' school doesn't have any drinking because they ALL do. Once they hit high school that's when it starts. At the same time, all schools also have groups of kids who choose not to drink. You're better off being a consistent presence in your child's life - continue to talk to them, ask questions and have important and serious conversations around drugs/alcohol/sex. Also, keep humor alive and well and judgments of others to a minimum. IME teenagers respond well to open and honest (and funny) conversations a whole lot better than the preachy and judgmental ones. You can still get your message across - but they will reposed better when you don't put them on the defensive about what their friends and classmates are doing. When you let them "steer" the conversation (with gentle prodding from you), you will find out what you need to know and keep your kids talking to you - which is exactly what you need while they are in high school.

Rather than trying to protect them from any antics that are happening at every school out there you're better off simply talking and being honest with your kids.

WHAT have you heard OP? You're dying to tell us. Just say it!

No private school who has parents that can pay the fair, want drunk kids. All kids experiment and test limits. They are people.

If not in HS, certainly in college. Don't pick on a school on this. Just be a good parent. That is all you can do.

Your kid will still F up, (as we all did), and if you teach well, will be okay. My oldest never did anything wrong in HS. As a freshman in College, he feels like he was missing out. He is almost 20, and I think might be drinking at college. OMG.

We all did dumb things. Our era's "KIA" is much smaller than the current.

Us parents just need know we did as good as we could...and then chill.

Don't pick schools on 'rap'. Its irrelevant.

the schools don't look the other way. The kids are just really sneaky and good at hiding things.

Be sure to read the school's policy for when your kid is caught bringing alcohol or pot to school.

You are out of luck. The correct question is 'which are the biggest drinking cliques', because there are groups at every school who get in trouble, and groups at every school who don't. Unfortunately, if you are a few years out, those groups haven't even been formed yet. Just be a good parent, and don't sweat it, because other than that, you cannot control it.
