I've heard Jillian's programs are hard on the knees.

There's a lot of jumping in 30 Day Shred. I found it hard on my knees, and also (TMI alert) I needed to wear a poise pad. Bladder control aint what it used to be after 2 natural child births.

You can do P90X3 (workouts are only 30 minutes). Just follow the modifier and work up to the harder level.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'm definitely looking for something to do at home before 5am or after 7:30pm. My husband watches the kids during the day, so 5-7:30 is my time with them (his break time). I'll check out Jillian and Gilad and see what happens.

Thanks!

I second the Gilad shows. I used these to get back in shape enough to do some more intense exercise shows and classes. Sounds like with your schedule you will need to exercise at night after the kids go to bed.

I would start with one of the Gilad shows on Discovery channel. Do that four days a week and walk three days a week or yoga at home three days a week.

Thanks PP. I've heard Jillian's programs are hard on the knees. Did your husband think so?

Not OP but my schedule sounds almost identical to hers (except only one child) and my goals are similar. I don't live near Bethesda so that wouldn't help, but I also don't see how I could get to a fitness group/boot camp near me (no childcare). Same problem with the gym. Ideally a home program would be something that could be done before 5 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Is there a program like P90X that isn't as intense?

Are you willing to join a gym? If so, I recommend taking classes, specifically body pump and any high intensity cardio class. Once you learn the basic lifts and form from body pump, go out on your own to the weight room, and do those exercises, 3x10 (3 sets, 10 reps per set). Then cocontinue taking the cardio classes maybe once or twice a week with weights twice a week. You can also check out New Rules of Lifting for Women for a nice background on weights and a 6 month exercise program.

If you want to just get started to get in the habit, I suggest Couch to 5k, a gradual running program, and some strength based DVDs (Jari Love, Ripped to the Core is one I like).

I would like to begin an exercise routine at home (not at a gym). I'm not obese, but I am overweight. I have two kids under 4 (not an excuse - just background). I get up for work at 5am and get home around 5pm. My kids go to bed around 7-7:30pm. I know there are a lot of programs out there and it's a bit overwhelming. I'm essentially starting from scratch (haven't exercised since before Baby #1), so I don't think I could keep up with P90X, T-25, or other super intensive workout. I would prefer a program, because pre-kids, I was always more motivated by a program, as opposed to random exercises I pieced together.

Any tips on good exercise programs for someone who hasn't regularly exercised in years? I'm not looking to become ripped, just healthy. I want to be able to keep up with my kids.
