I thought it was to wear between your skin and your wetsuit to prevent rash that some people get from the material of the wetsuit.

A swim shirt, as I have seen them advertised, seems looser and more intended to wear as sun protection out of the water or perhaps for water sports like canoeing, rather than being in the water to swim or surf.

Scuba diver here. I thought it was called a rash guard because it prevents the rash you get if you accidentally rub against fire coral.

Aussie here. No we don't call sunburn a rash. But I always thought the shirts were originally designed to stop jellyfish stings (which causes a rash and are pretty common in Australia).

It's meant for surfers to prevent a rash from rubbing their skin on the board. They weren't created for toddlers or bored housewives who want to go bra-less/bikini-top-less (from the thread in beauty and fashion).

They were originally designed to protect surfers from getting a rash when hitting the sand. Hence, "rash guard."
