No, it is not reasonable for you to refuse to go to work. At the very least, offer to work at home. No one gives a shit that you didn't shower for one day. Who the hell cares?

What did your not coming in mean for your boss and your colleagues? Don't you keep deodorant on hand? Missing a shower for one day is not grounds for missing work. I don't think most bosses, or colleagues, would understand!

I am not a clean freak like you OP (I've gone without for a couple of days on occasion) but I get where you are coming from. If I did not discovered there was no water until I was getting ready for work, I might call and take an hour or two off to give myself time to find a place to shower. Wet wipes and dry shampoo work great in a pinch too.

I loathe the idea of not showering before work, too.

I would have:
1) gotten up at 3 or 4 am before the known water cut off to shower.
2) purchased several gallons of water the night before to wash with.
3) found somewhere else to shower.
4) and if all that failed, I would have called in sick.

Wet wipes wouldn't cut it for me. My hair feels nasty to me and is limp, etc. Fine for others. I'd just still feel self conscious all day.

I've not gone in a few times due to not having water. My bosses all understood. So I'm with you, ignore the smelly people.

Yes, I do have a distinctive writing style but most people compliment me on it because they say it is easy to read since I space everything out and I can actually use correct grammar and punctuation.

They also like that I do not use run on sentences and use hash-tags or LOL-type add'ons to my posts.

He was right. That's a ridiculous reason not to come in to work.

If you shower every day missing one day won't make you stink. No nearby friends? No gym membership?

No. You could have cleaned yourself with wet wipes, applied fresh deodorant, and went into work. Your hair could be put in a ponytail or bun. I've done this in a pinch.

I would let my nanny shower at my house but i am not going to assume that would be ok with your boss.

No I don't think it's a legit reason. A boss might think you should take the initiative to solve little issues - take a shower at the gym, or at a friend's house - rather than miss work for them.

Okay so I live in a condo/townhouse complex building and the management had to repair a pipe yesterday morning so they had to shut off the water to all the units all morning which meant that I couldn't take a shower...Not even a cold shower.

Well, out of habit, I never leave the house w/out taking a shower. Never. Again, it's mostly out of habit. I am just a clean-freak by nature.

So I didn't go in to work yesterday, but came clean to my boss and told him the truth. "Come clean..." <------ No pun intended by the way.

My boss was totally pissed and said that was not a legitimate reason for staying out.

I never call in sick, I am very reliable and I could have easily lied and said I was ill, but I told the truth and look where that got me.

Anyway, what about any of you?

Do you think not being able to take a shower is a reasonable excuse to stay home from work??
