They have to have at least a cami for gym in middle school, regardless of breast size.

DD started wearing a training bra most of the time when she turned 9. She was among the first in her third grade class. She needed it both for modesty and because shirts were starting to chafe and irritate her sensitive areas.

We just got some for my 7th grader at Macy's. They had a real "bra department" with a wide variety of sizes and shapes.

There are a few girls in DD's 3rd grade who have started wearing the bralette/cropped camis. I bought her a few so that she had the option at any time. They are also good under shirts that have itchy stitching on them. So far we have discovered that the Gap ones are softer than the Old Navy ones.

The girls who are a little thicker (not toothpick thin) are needing them earlier.

A few of the 4th grade girls are wearing them in DD's class. Most are perfectly flat but occassionally wear tanks under shirts. My DD wears a sports bra sometimes, but its more like a flat bathing suit on her.

My daughter doesn't "need" a bra, but we got training bras and camis for her to wear when she started 6th grade. With changing into gym clothes, and knowing that many other girls would have some kind of bra, we concluded that she'd be more comfortable with something. (This was a joint decision after a conversation.)

When their nipples stick out. My DD is 11 and a rising 6th grader who isn't wearing one. Some girls from her school started wearing them in 4th grade.

At this point, if DD wants one before her body needs one, then that's fine and I'd be happy to get her some.

(I know that I got my first bras in mid sixth grade, and pretty much all us girls were wearing them by the spring of that year.)

Girls are developing earlier these days. I see third graders wearing "training bras". Many girls also opt for a shelf tank top under t-shirts as an added layer.

When do girls typically start wearing bras/bralettes these days? If I seem to remember the age seems to be more of a social decision as opposed to related to physical/modesty need, and I remember everyone seems to do at once so I want to be prepared.
