My grandparents are well off. My parents are selfish twits that did nothing with their lives so I grew up like some other posters rich and poor at the same time. We had very expensive oriental rugs/furniture (e.g.) but my parents' couldn't afford things like a decent "dinner" at times. My husband and I make a comfortable middle class living in the low $200's. We are very good savers so hopefully we will reach wealthy in our life times. We have $2M net worth right now.

My parents are the downwardly mobile ones in my family. My mother likes to spend like her parents are still footing the bill, and my father is a socialist who rejected his parents' mores/lifestyle. Swell!

It comes out in weird ways. Like my mother has absolutely no idea how to clean/iron/etc. or the inclination to do it because she grew up with a daily maid (plus nurse, plus gardener). But there sure as hell wasn't a maid when I was a kid, so our house was always a little too messy. But hey, we were eating our meals off bone china. That makes it all okay!

As my mother likes to point out, I will someday inherit lots of veeeery nice furniture (antebellum tester beds and the like), a shit ton of silver, and maybe some land, but absolutely no money.

Is this where the shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves clique can hang? Our expensively educated, brilliant parents had no money sense on epic, disastrous level. They couldn't fling it away fast enough.

My parents will not be giving me a downpayment for a house and I have way too many student loans.
I'm pretty much the odd one out in my group of friends in this regard. Sucks, but such is the middle class.

NO!! Never!! We still pretend that we are upper-class.

Good for you. You have class, not wealth. That is something you can never lose. At least not in one generation....

My father squandered a large inheritance and my mother's brothers screwed her out of her inheritance (she's also pretty terrible with money so that didn't help). My parents' divorce was really the least of their financial problems.

I just saw the nouveau riche lady thread and just thought "gosh, I can do better than that!"

Both of my parents came from wealthy families, and it all turned out rather badly.
