I have never had a successful growing season with tomatoes before this year. Fail as many times as I have (5+) and may the tomato gods take pity on you as they did for me.

The plants I bought and planted in May have tons of fruit on them! About 3 clusters of tomatoes and 6 clusters of flowers. So exciting.

The seedlings I grew from seed are growing well but so small in comparison. How long before I see flowers on those?

I use a lot of compost in the soil before I plant and add garden tone or tomato tone once a month. For watering, water at the base not all over the leaves and I plant lots of small carrots around the tomatoes. The carrots never grow to anything big enough to eat but it seems to help the tomatoes.

I've read that red mulch can help too but never tried it.

Is anybody else growing tomatoes like crazy? I have about 6 deck plants, several 2' tall when purchased second week of May. Thought the first flowering was a fluke but at least 4 of them are flowering and growing tomatoes. And my tallest plant is probably 4 1/2 feet tall. Anyone else seeing this kind of growth/production?

Why? Or why not?

Because on a indeterminate plant, all you're doing is slowing down when you get tomatoes. As long as the plant is big enough to physically support the fruit, they are good.

And worse, if you pinch flowers on a determinate plant, you will end up with fewer tomatoes overall, period!

We have small tomatoes on our plants too!

We bought some last week.

My kid has been taking care of them, and yesterday he told me they had tomatos growing.

I thought he was playing a joke since there were only flower buds, but sure enough, we have tomatos on two out of the three plants.

I am not a gardner but I figured that less than a week after you planted an eith inch plant is waaay to early.

I have a few.

I have some tomatoes growing also. My small plants were about a foot tall when purchased. Everything is growing really fast. I have 3-4 different plants that are flowering.

Don't pinch flowers unless the plants are under a foot tall (for normal sized tomatoes)! Expert gardeners never recommend it.

I bought some 12'' tall plants on Mother's Day and now have few little green tomatoes (cherry size, not quite as big as they're going to get). It can happen.

seems early to me. I always pinch off the first flowers. Maybe it's an early variety

I planted a couple of tomato seedlings about a month ago. They were fairly large seedlings and are doing really well in the garden, but I noticed yesterday that there are already some tomatoes coming. Not just flowers, but actual fruit. It seems way too early for this! Does anyone else have tomatoes coming in already? Shouldn't I have to wait until July?
