Eh, I don't see that as a huge deal. Almost every recipe you make with fish sauce calls for at least a small amount of sugar. Just omit a bit of it in the recipe!

At least sugar is a pretty natural ingredient.

If I can find a fish sauce with only fish, salt, and water that's good, I will update, OP.

Did you look at the Paleo/primal blogs? They usually know where to find stuff like that and have shopping lists. Try Nom Nom Paleo (she makes a ton of Asian dishes) or Mark's Daily Apple.

3 Crabs (and 5 Crabs, and all the other similar brands) all have "autolyzed yeast extract" aka MSG in them. Good fish sauce doesn't need additives to make it taste right.

I have to admit, a lot of our Vn friends like 3 Crabs, but most of them are Viet Kieu and have never had real Phu Quoc or Mui Ne fish sauce! There is no comparison -- the sauces that need additives to taste good are bleh.

I can't remember where my mom got RedBoat fish sauce from but she wasn't impressed. We're Viet.

Probably because it does not have sugar. Sugar makes everything delish! Especially SE Asian food!

Have you tried H Mart on GA avenue? There's also a Vietnamese store nearby that May have it. I'm Vietnamese and usually buy 3 crabs brand.

Just got a small bottle at whole foods for about $7. The larger bottle was $12.

I got it at Whole Foods in Friendship Heights. I don't remember how much it was, though.

I think I've seen it at the Foggy Bottom Whole Foods, but it's like $15/bottle, I think? I remember thinking it was too rich for my blood.

Honestly, DH is Vietnamese and I use fish sauce literally all the time. I usually just get whatever doesn't have MSG or hydrolyzed yeast extract (a fancy word for MSG!) in the ingredients. I used to get this great fish sauce from H-Mart that was imported from Phu Quoc island in Vietnam (that is the #1 place for fish sauce in the world), but they no longer carry it (just a bunch of knockoffs that are really from Thailand but say they are from Phu Quoc!).

I have been getting Megachef lately because, even though it has some added sugar, most SE Asian recipes call for sugar anyway, so I just cut the sugar from the recipe. It's a decent brand and it's only like $3/bottle. I've tried a lot of fish sauce for a white lady, and I think some of the reviews of fish sauce are not very good (lots of reviews highly rate sauces with HYE and that stuff tastes gross and artificial to me).

Anyone know where to get this in a store? I looked at ordering it online and it was around $18 on Amazon. I read a review of fish sauce brands that said the price was around $6 in a store.

I live off the NE edge of DC, but sometimes go to Montgomery County or the Northern VA burbs.
