OP, how will you know "top rate" when you see it? If you're looking for teachers whose kids win competitions, please say it. And find the competition results and see who the teachers are of those students. Just remember, they have to accept your child ....

OP- My son's piano teacher abruptly left for another country and gave us only two weeks notice. We tried asking friends for recommendations but none of them panned out. Finally, we called around several different music stores that don't offer classes in house and asked sales people for recommendations. I realize that these aren't necessarily unbiased recommendations but a good teacher will be known to the music stores so you might want to try that avenue. We were unhappy with three personal recommendations and very happy with the one we received from the store.

While Levine has some reasonable violin teachers, many teachers prefer to teach out of private studios if they have the space, since Levine takes a big chunk of the student's fee. There are plenty of violinists in the NSO that teach, AMy Beth Horman is also highly respected with some great students, another option is U Maryland, some of their music school profs will take very advanced precollege students, likewise Peabody in Baltimore.

We like our Suzuki violin teacher at Levine, but they also have a traditional Strings Department, where you could continue to enquire about a "top-rate" violin teacher. Or you could ask the local youth orchestra concertmasters where they train...

However I would think that given the tone of your question, you might have had a roster of "top-rate" Juilliard-trained instructors already lined up from previous connections.

I agree -- this has nothing to do with private schools - OP, you need to take your violin elsewhere.

OP here, someone recommend a violin teacher that charges highly and said she is first-rated. But I am not very impressed by her.

Second the Levine School recommendation. Most teachers will teach either method.
