If it's for business purposes you probably have to capitalize it, assuming you are running your business returns through your personal taxes, which is a hassle. If it's an unreimbursed business expense you need to make sure you are over the 2% threshold to be able to deduct it. And technically you would need to prorate the purchase for personal and business if you plan to use it for personal stuff at all. If you have a separate personal computer you may be able to claim the full value of the business computer.

I have decided not to bother to claim my next computer as a business expense because the paperwork is silly for a small purchase.

i have done it. it is easy if you have a copy of your previous submission. Personally, I wouldn't bother though to save a few bucks.

In my opinion, it is not worth it. You cannot do it electronically, and the difference it would make in what you pay/receive is negligible. I wouldn’t do it.

Hi, all.

It didn't occur to DH and I until now that we could include the computer we bought last year as a business expense. We asked the accountant who did our taxes about filing an amended return, and she told us she would charge $150 to do it.

I wonder whether it's such a difficult process to pay that amount of money to get it done. Anyone else file an amended return? Do we actually need an accountant to do this?

Thanks so much.
