3) For whatever reason, I don't love twins in matching outfits (though I don't hate it either), but I adore seeing sisters a couple of years apart in matching dresses.

My daughters are 4 and 2, and the older one often wants to do matching outfits, so I indulge her when I can. I used to teach Pre K and once had a pair of identical twins in my class who dressed alike EVERY DAY. I actually had a hard time telling them apart and had a conference with the parents suggesting they mix it up a bit. The mom said that the boys had always been dressed exactly alike and would go nuts if she didn't continue. Their names were matchy too (think Dustin and Justin, or Jeffrey and Jefferson). It seemed very unhealthy for the kids, but we worked on bringing out their individuality at school. I think the parents started with a "two of a kind" mentality and then couldn't stop.

We once bought identical sweatshirts for my daughters and myself at the beach. That's about as matching as I'm willing to take it.

1. Not tacky, just silly. It screams mom who has too much time on her hands. But little girls love to imitate Mom, so I say it's fine for a lark once in a while.

3. Not a fan. It shows that the parents are more interested in their twins as a novelty than in helping the twins become individuals. Not nearly as bad as matching twin names, though.

Along a similar line, when will the trend of whole families having coordinated outfits for photos end? At first I thought it was cute/artsy and for some reason I now just find it grating.

Mom and daughter matching outfits - Eww. Shades of Laura Ashley. Next you're going to coordinate with the drapes and linens.

Girl and doll matching outfits - Ugh. Tacky at best.

Twins in identical outfits - Can be cute. Can be a candidate for an intervention and CPS.

Is this an occasional event or a routine event? Did the kid(s) ask for it or did the parent decide? Those would make big differences in my opinion.

I know a family where the mom coordinates all the kids outfits with her own. I'm talking boys and girls. It is creepy.

As long as it's not all the time, and as long as the outfits themselves are elegant and understated, it's fine.
