Definitely get private instruction. You can get them pretty cheap at Hains Point or the other NPS parks in DC. I started as a kid and have played off and on for decades. I havent played the last two years though but its somethign I can pick back up. I find 18 holes tedious but love 9 holes on a short course. I grew up in NC though where everyone seems to play golf! I think golf is great because its a sport, like swimming (and sometimes tennis) that are universal and can be play for almost your entire life, My dad has arthritic and two artifical knees and still plays at least once a week. Go for it OP!

You'll know after 3 rounds if you like it.

If you don't, don't force it.

Go for it! I'm learning at 36 and loving it. Don't care if I ever get really good - I just want to be outside on lovely days and have fun.

Yes! I took it up in my early 30's and am temporarily sidelined due to no time (single parenting) but I still love to get out to the range and hit balls whenever I have a chance. I find it very satisfying.

I took lessons at East Potomac Golf Course - group lessons at first and then solo lessons. I found it a very welcoming place for beginners, and their range is beginner-friendly. (cheap balls, big stalls.) Also, they have two 9-hole courses, great for beginners.

good luck!

Call Rock Creek Park Golf Club. You can cheap private lessons and the course itself is super laid back so you don't have to worry you are a beginner, nearly everyone else is too!

PP here--I took first class when I was 48, so no worries about age.

Oh, yes, I think it is a great idea because it's sport you can continue to play for decades. My dad is 84 and is in two leagues!

Look for a Get Golf Ready course; the PGA sponsors them to get more people interested in golf. I took one at East Potomac Golf Course--you get small group lessons and a gift card for the driving range to practice between clasess. They have tournaments for beginners and everything. I am going to sign up for the second class in the series this summer.

Tried learning golf at a young age but gave up in frustration -- not being a natural athlete made it easy for me to do so. As I get older I see where it would be increasingly useful for work -- at industry conferences, etc. Plus, I have always liked the getting out, walking, and socializing part.

If I tried, what would I do? Find a driving range with an instructor and whack away until I get good? Any other suggestions?
