I am not sure if it might be too early - depending on his reading level. I LOVED the Golden Compass series when I was 10. I read those books so many times...and I still enjoy them today Author is Philip Pullman.

I loved The Westing Game growing up and considered getting it for our nephew for Christmas (he's in 4th grade) but I was afraid he'd balk at something so "old school," lol. Do kids these days still like this book?

Ended up getting him Lemony Snickett's Series of Unfortunate Events, which I think he liked.

39 Clues-- my DS loves it.

I like that people are mentioning classics. Your son might enjoy Sounder (short but thematically mature), Black Beauty, or even a Jules Verne book if he's particularly intrepid (shortest is Around the World in 80 Days)-- or The Hobbit.

Other thoughts: The Far Side of the Mountain, Hatchet, Stone Fox.

I've read that kids can "flatline" reading skills at around the middle school level. (i.e. kids choose to read books with easy text). You might look at the lexile or scholastic websites when providing guidance- make sure that the difficulty level is there so that your son continues to advance his reading skills.

Time to introduce the classics. Get a beautifully illustrated set and a decent dictionary. You won't regret it.

Looking for some new books for my soon to be 10-year old DS. He recently read the Candymakers and Phantom Tollbooth and loved both. He also likes the Andrew Clements books and enjoyed the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Would welcome any recommendations! TIA.
