OP, it sounds like she's doing the right thing. It's tight out there, and my sense is many retailers/employers have hired their summer workers. (My son is a high school senior, and that is the case at his job.) Also, not being free to work evenings might work against here, some applicants will be free day and evening, easier to manage. I'd focus on babysitting, daycare, etc. Still, she should continue her sweep. Best of luck to her.

It would help to know what physical area she's focusing her search on? DC proper? Maryland? Nova?

Tutoring? Dog walking? Babysitting?

Networking is just as important for young job seekers as for older job seekers. She should talk to friends who are working and see if their employers are hiring. Reach out to former coaches, teachers, youth group leaders and see if they have any leads. You should both mention the fact that she's looking to anyone you interact with (neighbors, your coworkers, etc.).

Babysitting/nanny for sure. Daytime at country clubs.

Does she need the money? If not some sort do community outreach or non-profit work will read well on her resume and help her find a mentor.

Lifeguard? Cart girl at a golf club (good tips)?

Is she open to/a good fit for doing work as a mothers helper? That seems like a good fit for her for daytime work with moms that are used to having part of their child brood in school during the day, yet haven't made plans for camps, etc.

DD is home from freshman year of college looking for paying work. This would be her first real job. Yes, she's doing the search herself, so no snark. She pounded the floors of the local Malls today and left resumes and cards. I'm looking for any interesting tips to help her in her search. She cannot work evenings because she is taking advanced math courses in the evenings to get ahead before she returns in the fall for sophomore year. The job market is miserable, of course. Any helpful suggestions would be most appreciated. She's smart, honest, a hard-worker, wants to please and is adept in foreign languages. Thank you in advance.
