Same here. She was quite prominent as a feminist writer at the time, kind of in the same category as Susan Faludi. I hadn't heard anything of her after her advisory role to Al Gore until the Tea Party emerged and she voiced sympathy to them. Before it was clear they were the crazy/racist/backward bunch that they mostly are, their message seemed more generally populist in the way that populism can be left or right. I'm guessing that when the movement went off the rails and became a reactionary freak show, her reputation took a hit with her progressive allies. I assume that her views were and remain liberal, but she just got caught in a political winds that were moving fast.
