What do you each make now? One of you making $200k sounds like a pretty high standard of living. DH and I each make $130k-$150k and live really well in upper NW DC.

Putting aside sales (which is its own unique category) and jobs with high technical knowledge (radiologist, attorney, IT), most people crack the $200K level by being at some level of management. In my arena, you do that by becoming a director of a product line. In marketing, you do that by becoming a VP of development, strategy, or a high level account manager. In a lot of manufacturing industries, you do that by becoming a project manager or a manager of sales or a manager of strategic communications, etc.

If your DH does not have management experience, that is where he needs to start. Can he get a promotion at current company into management? Can he leverage budget and financial skills or does he need to acquire those? Can he "think" like a manager or does he think management is bullsh*t, in which case he needs to go through an attitude readjustment about the contributions management adds to companies and their strategic direction? How comfortable is he telling others what to do, providing feedback (good and bad), and prompting others to be accountable? Etc.

This baffles me. I am in Aerospace and making 200k is director level which means years of working in the field.

How exactly would I break into 200k job in say IT. I have technical background but in aerospace ; would I retrain a masters in comp sci from gmu or something? And what company and job us this range? Senior consultant at Booz?

I think knowing how to navigate career comes from growing up other folks in these fields. Asking for such clear advice when you reveal some vulnerability you only do with old friends and family. But for us from rural parts of country, our folks are amazed when we make over 50k and our friends from home really can't relate to the job market and salary here compared to small rural cities.

My husband's career field is rapidly drying up and causing us some concern as his ability to earn is decreasing. We've accepted one or both of us may have to retrain and enter a new high paying field to maintain our standard of living. Any of you out there make $200K or more? If so, what do you do for a living?
