Another effort to separate out the higher income kids from south Arlington schools, particularly Jefferson. Amazing. S. Arlington is going to look like inner city schools that are 80-90% minority.

Hmmm...we're in Ashton Heights and three of four options have us at Wilson and just one at Jefferson. I don't like the options that split Ashton Heights between the two schools. I'd prefer they keep the neighborhood together. But I also don't like the two options that put Wilson over 1200 kids. Too big. If I had to pick one, I'd opt for #4 which keeps the size down but puts us at Wilson.

However, since DS starts Jefferson next year and DD is in 3rd grade, it probably won't (I hope!) impact us. I'm happy to have them at Jefferson. It does seem that this location would set up Wilson to be another highly affluent school, pulling from the expensive housing around the Orange line and reducing the number of affluent families at Jefferson. I'd prefer to have my kids at a school with more balanced demographics like Jefferson is now.

What browser are you using? APS loves Google, so maybe try Chrome if you haven't. I did better with Explorer than Firefox, although neither worked completely.

You'd think an organization that can't stop yammering about how important technology is would be able to come up with something that works in several browsers.

Okay I typed in my address but I still don't know my planning unit. Is it a number or color? Where does the site tell you?

I tried 3 different addresses, including one that is so far southwest, it will never be affected by boundary changes, and yet I can't get any planning unit #s to come up.

It screams "not ready for prime time." There obviously has been a lot of work put into the alternatives, but they aren't presented clearly or with consistent legends.

I have a K and 2nd grader in Key/ASFS...and the best projections would have a new middle school opening when my oldest hits 7th...which sucks since she'll have to move schools after the first year. However, I would probably do this (even if they offered the option to choose) so she could be with younger sibling in the same place for at least the last year of older sib's middle school. Let me tell you---two kids at the same school---same start and end times, same pick-up is a god-send. I'm not doing two middle schools across town from each other!

I thought I saw they were basing #s based on current 1st through 3rd graders so assumably a current 3rd grader would be the first graduating class. Although, if they were only going to be there for 8th grade maybe they would not move them from the current middle school for only one year.

There will be a lot of parents insisting that their kids should be allowed to finish where they started. I hope APS doesn't cave.

It's kind of difficult to decipher. The main take-away is that people will be lucky to get into it and that it's going to deter people from moving into S. Arlington because Kenmore and Jefferson will have higher concentrations of low-income students.
