I did the same I checked the sticks and they were all dead. No buds from last year. Just new growth at the base.

Mine had lots of dry, dead buds on the old wood. Sad.

I had two. One has leaves coming back, but the other has not one bit of green anywhere. We removed it last week and put in roses.

This winter was really rough. If you have leaves at ground level but dry tips, it's good to trim back the dry to make room for the green. Maybe they'll come back over time.

I've still got leaves just at the bottom too. I'm a newbie and I was just thrilled that it survived the winter at all!!

Oh, good. I was wondering this, too. Mine looks dead except for the leaves at the bottom/center. I wondered if I should prune, but it's a massive plant and it would be reduced to a mini shrub.

A lot of hydrangeas died back to the ground and aren't budding out on the stems but are sending new growth from the base. I have a few branches with leaves growing from further up, but cut off a lot of branches that didn't have any growth. I think you should go ahead and cut off the branches with no new growth.

Mine, too! Nice, pretty, big leaves but nothing at the top. I'm they're ok, just late this year.

No they are late this year. Only leaves at the bottom so far.

Mine are not. I have been wondering the same thing.

I have the forever hydrangea and there are only leaves at the base of the plant. I forget when they start getting full of leaves and buds. Did they get damaged over the winter? This is their fourth year and I've never trimmed them but it hasn't been an issue in the past.
