My handyman also explained how you can drive your ratings up on Angie's List. I had both while we were renovating, but stuck with only CC.

Yep. I was an Angie's List member for a while, but I trust CC a lot more, so I cancelled Angie's List.

I like it better than reccs from neighbors, or Angie's List. YMMV.

I don't know if it's better, really, just different. I had both Consumers Checkbook and Angie's List at the same time and was surprised to see the number of companies that were on only one of the lists.
