This is true at Key and Mann. Very small 5th grades. Not clear what pp thinks is wrong.


I am certain that it's patently wrong to assert that "very few" private schools in dc / close in "have admission" in 6th grade.

In fact, ALL the best independent schools admit students in 6th grade. In fact I'll go even further and state that for the best-known schools, 6th is one of their two most important intake years (with 9th being the other ).

Do you even live in dc?

My understanding is over 90% of Janney, Murch and Lafayette go on to Deal, I would expect the same numbers from Eaton and Hearst but have not heard that specific assertion anywhere.


FYI this information is publicly available and easy to access - look at the "sticky" post to the DME materials in this forum and you will find tables showing exact numbers.

Sidwell Friends has an entry point at the 6th grade, along with 5th.

the easiest (in terms of transitions) entry point for NCS and STA is 4th, and this happens at Mann every year...

Families used to peel off for private / Maryland before Deal got stronger. This is not that long ago. I have friends who now have HS students who were watching really closely 5 years ago - and some of their friends went private.

Currently, I know families IB for Hardy that pull when they get the right match - private or charter. I know students IB for Key who started at Key who are now at Landon, Holton Arms, Stone Ridge.

there's always going to be some attribution because folks move, but my experience has been that those heading to independent schools leave after 5th grade.

I should also add that Murch used to have 3 5th grade classes. This year they added in a 4th. Kids are definitely sticking around which is probably true for the other Deal feeders.

I don't think this is true for the Hardy feeders yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they started to see the same as Hardy gets stronger.

Murch had one child go private last year. The year before they had three.

The 5th grade team has been at Murch for years. They have said this is a huge change from just a few years ago.

Is there any truth to what some on the boards have said-- that even the DCPS elementary schools WotP have a great deal of attrition in the older grades-- 3rd grade + -- (to private schools and/or charter schools)? I'm especially curious to hear from parents who have kids in these schools about their experience.
