Subject: Frightened: callback after mammo
I get called back every time, and I've been having mammo's for 10 years now. My breasts are dense, so I usually get an u/s during the callback. Don't freak out - its sooooo common.

I spent several years as a high risk... lady, I guess, before finally having prophylactic mastectomies following some actually abnormal biopsies (as opposed to the many oops that was nothing biopsies) a few months ago.
The waiting and worrying can be maddening, but the thing is, you really don't know what you're dealing with until the checking-this-out process is complete. After the first few scares, I decided that my job really was limited to cooperating with the testing processes. There are no bonus points for worrying, as long as you check everything out promptly whether or not you're freaking out. I understand that this probably will cast a shadow over your weekend, but do your best to take your mind off it for now and follow through with your appointment next week!

Most callback mammograms don't lead to a diagnosis of cancer. Most of them don't even require biopsy; ultrasound and diagnostic mammograms aren't all that bad.
Please don't worry too much -- it happens to most of us.

I got called back. Had to have a biopsy and everything turned out okay. Going for 6 month follow up next month.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Hopefully everything will turn out ok!
I think a lot of people get called back out of an abundance of caution. Try not to worry. Do your best to distract yourself with other things- favorite tv show, movie, go shopping, running, exercise, a scoop of ice cream. Just know that you will get through this!

My grandmother just had to have a mass removed. She came over from her 3rd world country, we were all freaking out. Turned out to be just a fluid filled sac. Hang in there.

They need to look at the tissue changes in one breast with ultrasound (and mammo for calcification in other breast).
Woops, sorry...meant to say did PPs who got callbacks get ultrasound too?

I always get called back and even had a biopsy once, but it's not been anything bad in the end. Try to stay calm!

I got called back after my first mammo and then had to have a biopsy. It was absolutely terrible, both the anxiety and the procedure itself. But... everything came back clean. I just went in for a 6 month follow-up and everything was clean there too. Try not to worry.
Mammograms are really a mixed bag and there's a lot of controversy about the recommendations to start at 35-40 given the rate of false positives on the screening that require follow-up.

I had the same thing happen. I freaked out too but everything was fine. If you have dense breasts it's just hard to see sometimes and then they'll call you back. Try not to panic. And definitely, next time get the 3d one. I didn't get called back after doing that one. Good luck!

They need a better look at calcification in left breast and "tissue layering differently" in right breast (I had baseline 2 years ago). She said I have very dense breasts so they need to get a better look to make sure nothing is hiding in there.
I'm kicking myself for not doing 3-D image in the first place. There's no available appt until next week and I'm supposed to go away this weekend and don't know how I will be able to enjoy myself. Freaking out!
