The oldies are great. Frank Sinatra (Duets is a great album). Dean Martin (like, Volare!). Girl from Ipanama, stuff like that. I'm a believer in going for stuff that YOU would also like, rather than YOU having to listen to Alvin and the Chipmunks. A bonus is the kids get some exposure to some quality music.
This sounds kind of crazy, but the Pottery Barn music they play when put you on hold is such a great mix that there is a following (of which, I'm a fan). Stuff by Ella Fitzgerald etc. They've got a CD.
I have a little playlist I called "Driving with Kids" (done a few years ago when mine were younger--6,8 ish, for just that purpose of catchy tunes with clean lyrics. Let's see: On Top of the World, and Sing a Song (Carpenters), Don't Stop Believing (Journey…technically a bit edgy but goes over their heads), Saturday in the Park (Chicago) (also Does Anybody really Know what Time it Is? and Make Me Smile) and Boston's More than a Feeling…
Asia has a long one Eye of the Tiger…
Also if raining (I love this playlist, so fun and mostly upbeat. Songs about "rain" seem to really be about a new beginning…)
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (Burt Bacharach)
I Can See Clearly Now The Rain Has Gone (Jimmy Cliff)
Somewhere Over the Rainbow (I think Judy Garland but I like the one by that Hawaiian guy Israel K __)
Singing in the Rain (Gene Kelly)
I Love a Rainy Night (Eddie Rabbit)
Africa (Toto)
Storms in Africa 1 and 2 (Enya)
Don't Look Back (Boston)
