Yes, they're edible, but "safe to eat" is different from "good to eat".
They're not actually strawberries, by the way. It's Duchesnea indica, "Indian strawberry" or "mock strawberry". Indian as in from India.

where do you find the early, mid and late season varieties? I've been to American Plant and they only have everbearing and June bearing.
