We did a read aloud of Wrinkle in Time and I thought that the story was really good (I had never read it before). I thought that there was enough action going on in the story to hold a young reader's interest. My boys didn't like it, though. In fact, they both said that it's one of the worst stories that they've ever read (worst?? really??)...certainly not what I hoped that they would get out of it. Sigh.

I read it when I was 8. I loved it. I did find the beginning a bit tedious and weird but then I absolutely loved it.

It introduced at a child's level concepts like facsism, ultra-conformity, nonconformity, time travel. It was also about children having a real adventure. I remember my mind racing when I read it.

I didn't realize it was a series. Can't wait to see my kids' expressions when I jokingly tell them that we are going to read the whole thing!

My kids are 8 and 9, and yes reading it aloud.
Just too strange for us. At least my kids comments are really making me laugh. We would all love to escape into the imaginary world, but we can't even figure out what world we're going to!

I liked it. Don't remember why, though.

Tried to reread it recently and couldn't get into it.

I agree with 23:00. Loved it for the same reasons.

OP, I loved the first book. I thought the last two weren't as enjoyable.

I read this book as a child and loved it. It was the only science fiction type book that I enjoyed. What I remember liking about it: the quirky misunderstood characters, themes of good vs. evil, and mysticism. Loved the ending too.

Are you reading it aloud? Not all great books are great read-alouds. I learned my lesson with "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"--should just have let my daughter read it and enjoy it on her own.

+1 I remember hating it while everyone else loved it.

You're not. I read the whole series and I didn't really care for any of them. Too weird. I loved other sci-fi and fantasy books, but not that one.

Try The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper instead.

This is such a famous book, and on every list that I see of great books for kids.
My kids and I are about 2/3 of the way through it, and we feel tortured!!! We are dying to get to the end. It is so strange and slow moving.
Can someone please tell me what they loved about it?? Maybe we are missing what is so great about it!
