+1 This is what we have been doing the past few years for my difficult mother, after many prior complaints about what we gave her.

And if she is offended by getting just a card, then she can tell me. And I'll still be there, not caring.

+2. And it's easier to ignore the complaints, if any, when I've only spent $ instead of $$ or $$$.

Does she live in town or nearby? plan an activity with her or invite her to your house for mother's day meal.

A snapfish card of all her grandkids? And if she complains about it, tell her how negative she is. People like that need to hear how difficult they are.

First, read this article about what mothers REALLY want for mother's day:
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2014305060012

Second, a card with a really thoughtful note and a homemade gift certificate for something (dinner with your family, coming over to help her to clean out all of her dead orchids, a trip to the movies with you).

Chocolate from Leonidas? Outing with the grand kids?

OP here I should add that she gets all hurt if I don't have something thoughtful.

She told you that she doesn't like clutter. So I would buy her a bouquet of flowers and a card. No need for a big gift on Mother's Day, anyway.

Flowers delivered. Card. The end.

Does she live nearby? If so, how about theater tickets? Otherwise, Harry & David tower, some chocolates, some flowers -- things that are ephemeral. Or maybe a magazine subscription?

She's 66, and a grandma too (my mom). Five grand kids w 6th (mine) on the way.

She's a very negative person and hard to please but doesn't think she is. I used to have my kids (now 8 and 5) make her something but she informed me last year "don't have them make anything, I'm running out of room in my house and you know I don't like clutter."

She loves orchids. Last time I got her one she told me she already had 20 at home.

Doesn't work, no hobbies, nothing really a GC for (parents are pretty well off).

Suggestions?
