Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. How do I know if I need more than a will? What exactly do I need? The whole wills/trusts issue is very confusing to me.

$1500 is a pretty typical cost for a living trust, will, advance medical directives and durable power of attorney around here. A fair number of firms will quote a fixed price. You'll need to do a little legwork to fund the living trust (i.e. re-title the house and car, change the bank accounts to the trust etc) but they could do that for you too if you don't mind paying their hourly rate.

We called a few placed in NOVA and DC recently and the prices tended to range from around $1250 to $2000 for basic wills/trusts/etc for a married couple.

For the time being, we decided to use the Quicken Will Maker software instead.

Not OP and not trying to hijack thread, but how much should we expect basic wills/trusts/custody stuff to cost?
