It appears that DCPS is already thinking about reassigning a part of the old Bowen attendance zone to VN.

Does anyone have sense how many elementary-aged students live in SW between South Capitol and First streets? And how many live IB for the historic boundaries preferred by the Van Ness boosters on this board. I recall hearing that DCPS wanted at least 250 IB students before Van Ness would be reopened and have a hard time believing that the number is anywhere close to that right now.

Appletree has just secured a new space in SW. But Amidon did have them move because their classes had grown, so it's probably a net increase in seats.

Just remember that 82$ of the students enrolled go to Amidon but who knows what percentage of school aged kids in the cachment area enroll there.

They had seats in preK 3 and 4 and grades 3 and 5. The only OOB kids that were offered spaces were two PreKs who had sibs enrolled and the grade 3 spots. Shockingly enough, no one wanted the grade 5 spots. So, it looks like it's pretty much following the pattern of not-great elementary schools with some increased neighborhood interest - people use pre-K and then maybe stay but maybe bail from the system.

alternately, as I just posted in the other thread, the schools could form a cluster with Van Ness offering early grades and Amidon offering upper grades. That would allow each school to really specialize and create an economically diverse student body at each school.

Now, that's an idea that might work: kids in the projects north of M street stick with Amidon and those south head to Van Ness or something. Would distribute the higher needs learners across the schools.

I think this is a spin off from the "why doesn't Van Ness have a boundary" thread in which various Navy Yard posters are angsting in a somewhat ugly way about how to draw the boundaries so as to reduce the chance of any poor kids being in bounds for the new school, with those that attend Amidon being the object of most immediate concern. (Especially considering the fact that all the poor kids that were displaced from SE in order to build the new townhouses over there mostly got rezoned to Amidon.)

Definitely. With a border to include the first couple blocks on the west side of So. Capitol St.

The DCPS Round One My School DC results show that Amidon-Bowen has filled every seat for every grade except for 6 seats in the 5th grade. Shouldn't this prove that Van Ness Elementary School should be reopened?
