God is who snarky DCUM people, Hillary Clinton , Oprah Winfrey and Howard Stern will be on their knees in front of unable to lift their eyes and make any case that they were good. Just like all the rest of us.

The church we attend is in line with my general beliefs in terms of good works, non-discrimination, etc, so if he gets that general framework during his formative years, not sure if I care whether it's because some guy in the sky says it, or it's just because there are some moral absolutes independent of a deity.

So why inculcate him with something you are not sure you believe yourself? Why not take him to a Unitarian congregation or an Ethical Society to get the same moral training without the questionable deity.

That's what I'd say -- that God is like Santa Claus and the Easter bunny, but he's around all year long, and he's mainly for kids. Then when the kids grow out of a need for santa, et al, they will grow out of god too.

Explain as related to your family's belief system. There is no one right answer.

Op here...I don't necessarily want people to tell me how to handle it; I want to hear how others would or have.

How would you /have you answered the question "who is god" from a 3 year old? What do you p ersonally believe, and what would your answer be? How and when do you explain dinosaurs and the big bang theory, and is that in any way related to your conversation about god?
