To my knowledge there are NO private nonprofit schools that don't receive federal funding. Perhaps some of the for-profits (University of Phoenix, etc) do not.

Federal funding in this context refers to students of the school receiving federally subsidized loans and Pell grants. I don't know any colleges where students aren't eligible to receive these.

If you examine the entire history of every college and university, and if you think about the deplorable state of humanity today, I suspect that every university and college here and around the world has earned a place on that list. Why limit it to only 55?

My DC will be attending a school on this list next year, and is waitlisted at 2 more schools on the list. I went to one of the highest profile offenders (at least news wise). My DD goes to one NOT on the list. I think this is an issue at most colleges frankly. I'm glad this issue is coming to the forefront and that colleges are starting to address this much more seriously. But really, not being on this list gives me no confidence whatsoever that the school is handling things any differently than those who are on the list.

Is your school on the list? Lot of popular DCUM-approved schools on there.

No way I'd send my daughter to ANY school on that list.

Even if your daughter wanted to go to Harvard Law?

I get that some schools on the list are good schools. Very good schools. But guess what? There are very good schools not on that list.

Vanderbilt is a very good school, but it's on THAT LIST (for good reason http://deadspin.com/disturbing-allegations-emerge-in-vanderbilt-rape-case-1269706271) so it will NOT be on DD's list.

Sure someone will be happy to take her place. I pray it is a boy, because women deserve better.

Not hard to see why Vanderbilt is on the list:

The 5 members of the Vanderbilt football team gang raped an unconscious coed in her dorm room last June. One of the rapists claimed coach Franklin saw the iphone video and counseled erasing it.

BTW Penn State hired "coach Franklin" - football before women

Not pp, but I would avoid these schools as well. Yes, even Harvard Law. Is that the only excellent law school? I think not. As a woman, I'm not going to sell out for the stamp of approval. My daughter will not either. Schools that tolerate assaults on women must be shamed. Some of these top 25 schools, Dartmouth and USC come to mind, have been ignoring complaints (or giving them lip service) for years.

Are they as serious as coverups, or is it a case where a student has reported a sexual assault to a staff person with obligatory reporting responsibilities, but asked the school not to investigate, and the school has heeded the student's wishes instead of following the law?

I think it's a pretty sleazy move to release this list to publicly shame those 55 universities, without giving us enough information to make any sort of judgement.

I disagree. This is great.

I know for a fact that one of the schools on the list had one incident that even feminists on campus view skeptically. I agree that there is something wrong with this list. They should have either printed more information or not done it at all.

A lot of the big "party" schools with big Greek systems made the list. I'm not surprised.

This is only what was reported. Additionally, some women don't report assaults so I'm sure this list, at a minimum, should probably be much longer.
