Cheese, crackers, grapes, and bottled iced teas are high in calories. You probably consumed a lot more than you think since you were probably hungry from working out. Track what you eat, and cut out some of the tea.

Me too! Gaining muscle is hard work! I'd love it when this over used reasoning for weight gain goes away. OP one week doesn't mean anything. I fluctuate up to 5 lbs daily. Work out because you like to be healthy and reap the benefits. By the way, I started lifiting weights and working out intensely when I was 230lbs and GAINED 5 pounds almost right away so i know how you feel. I couldn't understand how I was so big and not dropping it easily, but I kept at it. 6 months later I was down 60lbs and I have a great set of arms, abs, and quads. More importantly I'm really fit. That's more important to me than what I weight anyway. Just keep at it.

Thanks! I will keep at it. It's took everything for me to not go to the gym today. That slight soreness after a workout feels soooo good because you know you've done something good for your body. BUT my muscles also need to relax so I'm forcing this break today .

Tomorrow I will be back at it !

OP here.

Thanks for the feedback, all!

1. Yes, I realize I'm no longer 32, and I don't need to see the results quickly, I was just hoping to some pay off for the work I put in this first week. That would've really motivated me. The good news is that I feel good knowing that I've worked out. Showering after a sweaty workout is the best feeling ever! (It will feel even better when I see and feel the results--lower scale numbers, body parts tightening, etc.)

2. The other great news is that I do see this as a lifestyle change. My diet changed dramatically over the years. I used to be a huge soda drinker. But I've replaced that vice with the bottled iced teas and iced chai teas (which replaced the iced mochas). I also realized 5 days a week is NOT sustainable over time. Hence, cutting down to just 3 days per week.

3. I don't have a scale at home. I use the one at the gym.

Weight varies day to day, so .6 tells you nothing much. Also are you comparing the gym scale to an earlier weighing you did at home? My gym scale doesn't match my home scale.

But more importantly, OP, I think you're overdoing it for someone just getting back into it. You sound like you're pushing too hard which makes it more likely you will get injured and more likely you'll quit when you run into difficulty maintaining that level of exercise. Seriously, if you want to develop life-long good habits, dial it back a bit and stop obsessing about every half pound.

I say this as someone who used to push too hard at the beginning and then felt bad I couldn't keep up with what I thought a good person should do and then I'd quit. Better to do less at first and make it a habit and then dial it up as you get stronger.

Anyway, hang in there and good luck with your workouts!

The only thing you're doing wrong is weighing yourself and drinking so much sugar (or chemicals). Put down the ice teas and keep going to the gym. Weigh yourself after you finish your period.

You're not in your early 30s anymore and you WILL see results if you stick to it. Why do you need to see them immediately? Are you planning to stop if you don't? Here's some homework for you--write down a list of 10 reasons that eating well and exercising will benefit your life even if it doesn't change your body. Put it somewhere you can see it daily (bathroom? Over your dresser?) and remember that your body is more than just a shell.

You can gain 2.6 lbs in one day anyway, it has so much more to do than body fat and muscle--salt, water, poop, menstrual cycle.

Weigh yourself once a month. That's it. Take tape measure measurements now and once a month also.

Hang in there...it's a long road. You can do it!

LOL @ the Biggest Loser style dramatic weight loss.

BUT no...I wasn't expecting MAJOR weight loss, but at least 1 pound. Maybe 3-5 with as much time and effort as I put in this week.

Besides, during my early 30s I lost weight quickly in the very beginning.

I thought I'd see something in the first week.

Oh well. I'll try again in another week or two.

I must say that it does feel good to get back into the gym though. I just wanna see fruit from my efforts! I wanna see results!

SO I went to the gym 5 days this week. FIVE! I went last Saturday...Sunday...Tuesday...Thursday...then TODAY.

I stood on the scale and realized I've gained .6 pounds since last Saturday!

I did an hour of cardio on the elliptical every single time I went. I also worked on machines that worked out my legs and arms/lower back. Today I did crunches for the first time.

I know you're not suppose to rely on the scale but on the way you feel and clothing fit in order to determine weight loss, as muscle weighs more than fat so I could've gained muscle during the week.

On the other hand, the first few pounds are supposed to drop quickly. So what in the world???

I may be pre-menstrual. My cycle starts at the very end of the month and in the days leading up to it, I get bloated.

Please HELP! What am I doing wrong? I haven't been overeating and actually skipped lunch a few days this week by snacking through it (apples, grapes, crackers and cheese) so it can't be that I gorged on food. However, I am nearly obsessed with bottled ice teas and probably drank them more than water this week.

And ideas? Advice?

It should read that I gained .6 OF A POUND. (Just so you don't think I gained 6 pounds after 5 days in the gym in one week.)
