We just bought a terrific house (out of state) that was on the market way longer than it should have been (as in, it should have sold within a week like all the other houses in that market). Reasons we got it/it didn't sell (per our agent and per our analysis) include:
antlers/deer heads on a wall in every room
bear rug
fish tanks or turtle tanks in every room
a coop of baby chicks in one room - this wasn't visible in the photos, though (I'm pretty sure this was an Easter-time project.....)
VERY dark walls and dark shots
failure to use a wide-angle lens for photos
FWIW, we realized later that the owner had used his sister as his agent and she probably wasn't able or decided not to use some of the more sophisticated lighting.
We bought the house the day after the owners moved out. We're convinced that if we'd not done so, it would have gone in a heartbeat because they would have re-shot it without the antlers and shown it without all the animals......

1. A book on top of the toilet tank. Nobody wants to think of you sitting there taking a leisurely dump.
2. A can of air freshener on top of the toilet tank. See above.
3. The remnants of a roll of toilet paper sitting on top of a fresh roll of toilet paper on the tp holder. See above.
4. Your own image partly visible in a mirror as you take the picture.
