FYI I just got an email from a recruiter - for a job i applied for 18 mos ago. Super curious as to how that happened.

It entirely depends on the job and the company / organization. I've also been surprised to hear from employers several months after I submitted my resume and after I'd taken another job (!).

Usually if I don't hear within a month of the closing date I assume I did not make the cut for an interview. Every interview I've been invited to has taken place within 2 - 3 weeks of the closing date. The one exception is what I referred to above. I got a call six months after I submitted my resume and I declined the offer to interview because I had already started with another firm and was very happy.

It's been a while since I sent out my resume cold, and don't recall how long I've waited in the past. These are for advertised job openings, most with a specified closing date after which they will no longer take applications. How long after that date do you hold hope for hearing back?
