Alpaca should not be put in a machine to be washed where it is agitated that is where the problem occurs. Needs to be gently washed.

My dad was a huge guy. When his alpaca sweater was put in the dryer and ended up the same way, I took it and stowed it away for my son. Years later, he almost fits it! I call that the silver lining on this thing. My dad passed away and I still have this gift for my son. I look forward to having him wear a sweater his Paw Paw loved.

19:51 Dyeing it might have worked if I stepped back after the initial event but I wanted to try and get the stains out before the garment dried and the stains set in. It went downhill very fast after that.

The only consolation, a big one, is that I bought it for of a fundraiser so the money is serving a good cause.

Thanks 00:17. I screwed up and I've learned from that experience, it will never happen again. Maybe I've just been lucky but I think I have some skill with laundry...after many, many years of doing my own laundry, even washing silks and woolens, I've damaged maybe 3 garments, although still wearable by me or someone else. This is the first time that I've completely trashed an item and I feel bad that no one else can wear it either.

Assuming that many other people's sweat is on clothing before I buy it and that an item's probably hit the shop floor a few times, I always wash new clothing before I wear it. Exceptions if it's very high end, has minimal skin contact (like a jacket) or is extremely delicate.

I'm sorry OP. My DH accidentally tossed a $100+ Alpaca sweater in the wash. Then the dryer. It shrunk from my adult small to a 2T. I still cry over that sweater. I hung it in our laundry room as a reminder to us all.

Why would you put a $150 dress in the wash in the first place? Did it say it was machine washable on the care label? What was the fabric?

Can't believe I did this. Totally trashed a brand new $150 dollar dress in the laundry. First washed it with an item that's close enough in color, you'd think, but that color ran and stained the dress. Then tried to remove the stain with various stain removers and the dress wound up with far worse stains and it's now in the trash . In all of my years of doing laundry I've never destroyed an item so thoroughly that it's absolutely unwearable. I can't even donate it to a person in need. Ugh. Vent over.
