I am a previous charter school teacher who switched to the public school. My salary at the charter school was only $40K, my starting salary for the district was closer to $50K. I left prior to the start of my second year at the charter school because with major gains (they even asked me to loop with my students) I was offered a raise of $1800. I have a Masters degree, and I felt I deserved more. Plus my health insurance was insanely expensive with high deductibles.

You know, people on DCUM always say this but I've not actually noticed it at our charter. So it's probably worth looking into at your school before you get too concerned.

If a school expands *charters) or if teachers retire (DCPS)..there will be a lot of openings.

OP here. PP, what you describe is what I was afraid of.

Are teachers hired so late because it's hard to recruit teachers to come teach in DC? Or is it ineffective administration? Or is it the norm across the country?

It seems odd for the school system to have so many open positions.

It is very, very common for teachers to be hired in late August. Ask any teacher how they got their first teaching job. Odds are the story begins something like, "It was one week before the start of school and I had sent out a bunch of resumes and not heard anything, so I had resigned myself to working at Starbucks and subbing when I could. Then my phone rang and it was the principal, asking if I could start on Monday!"

I think it is normal if you have about 10% of you staff leaving every year. If it is 25% or more, than that is usually not a good sign. Some SE schools hit 40% or more.

It's almost all charter schools, many of them new or expanding. Unless your child is going to be enrolled at Options, why would you think this reflects on a particular school?

It looks like my child's school has openings for several teachers in her grade. I was looking the number of teachers not hired across many schools, but my child's school is missing a few key roles. I'm not use to such turnover as I'm coming from another state.

Are you focused on a specific school? Where are you getting this data?

I noticed quite a few job openings for school teachers for 2014-15 and wondered when they are usually hired. Are teachers for the upcoming year usually hired in the summer? Are teachers used to this schedule. Should I be concerned that there are SO many teacher job openings? I assume that means there is a lot of teacher turnover at the school?
