OP here, I thought it was great because it encourages compassion for others-i.e. treat the stranger on the bus as nicely as you would treat God.

Because it refers to God as "a poor slob on the bus" like "one of us." (I have no problem with that. I think we should look at others that way.)

Maybe people were offended that she was saying God was ordinary? I don't know, but coincidentally just heard it this morning on Sirius after not having heard it for a long time.

Because to a certain brand of (usually right wing) Christian, any reference to God that doesn't fit their parameters is by definition Heresy/Sacrilege/Blasphemy/etc.
