There is a lot of fraud in olive oil business in Italy. If you read the label on a bottle of Italian olive oil, you'll see that it often contains oil from other countries including Turkey, Algiers and so on.
Since I don't have the time to worry about this, I just stay away from Italian oil. There are plenty of alternatives.

I use Colavita virgin olive oil for sauteeing and recipes that call for "olive oil" and not "extra virgin olive oil" because EVOO has more flavor. I then buy EVOO for salads, bread, etc. I usually stock up on Fairway brand EVOO when I am in NY. They have different varietals and it is so good and not ridiculously expensive.

Frantoia
Alziari

I dont cook with these - more salad dressings, antipastos, crostinis and bread. For everyday cooking, I use Trader Joes

You know a lot of imported olive oil is mislabeled? That's part of the reason I buy California Olive Ranch. Plus I really want cold pressed, unfiltered oil for its health benefits. All products labeled olive oil or EVOO are not created equal.

I agree with the Colavita rec. You can get a two-pack on Amazon for not too much.

Olive Oil from TJs from Spain (the best olive oil is from Spain- this is the oil you dip bread into and relish)

is there an olive oil that won't break the bank but can also multi-task as an everyday oil and one that tastes good enough to eat with a little salt, pepper and bread?

thx!
