IF you are willing to come to NOVA, there are some beginner clinics for that age range. It's not as intense of a sport in the rec leagues.

Look for volleyball camps, too. That's a sport that kids don't have the coordination to play until they're about 10-12, so a 13 year old beginner isn't unusual.

KOA and she will do just fine. We found many of the girls who started lacrose so early didn;t have the hand eye coocrdination for those early years and our kids caught up very quickly.

I'm not worried about DD -- she's one of those freakishly coordinated and athletic people who will catch on pretty fast.

Geez, people. Why do you feel the need to discourage the OP? Bullis and I believe St. Andrew's have camps that might fit your needs. Good for your daughter for wanting to investigate team sports. I suspect she'll do very well.

Bullis has both lacrosse and field hockey. They are not advanced. Many girls don't start field hockey until HS.

Mine did a lax camp at NCS. Check NCS, Sidwell, Madeira, Holton, Visitation, SSSA for various sports camps. Sometimes there are private camps held on their campus as well. You can also get in touch with the local lacrosse clubs for suggestions, maybe try Bethesda Lacrosse?

Agree with the PP about it being challenging to be an old beginner. My DC suffered from that at the NCS camp as she was about the same age as your DD. But she sucked it up because she really wanted to learn to play lacrosse and ultimately did go on to play in HS.

There are tons of camps that teach those sports. All the private schools and the rec centers teach them. You can get an idea how intense they are from the descriptions. The camps that aren't all day sports tend to be more for beginners. Either way, there will be some players who are more seasoned.

But, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a rec team with low numbers that would take her right now for soccer.

Nope. I have a boy who wouldn't do lacrosse because he didn't like the boys in his class who played.

Unfortunately I can't think of any opportunity to begin a sport at that age. As we discovered a few years ago, in MoCo you are "over the hill" by 10 in terms of starting a sport.

DD is very athletic and has done a lot of individual sports like swim team and horseback riding as well as dance. I think she would catch on to a new sport quickly.

She's now interested in a team sport -- something I want to encourage. She'd like to do a week of camp to learn a new sport, and I'm not sure where to start. She will be going into eighth grade. Ideas include field hockey and lacrosse -- she's not interested in softball and she's really way too short to play basketball.

Any ideas on where I can find such a camp? DS does a lot of sports camps but it's all basketball and baseball, and not at the intro level.
