I would spend the $26 to join "our-kids.com" which has listed hundreds of things to do and events and you just put in the date and find things to do. There is a lot free on that site, but even better if you join. (I am not associated with the site, just a member.)

There are 3 standbys that we've been doing since before kids: 1) hiking in Shenandoah National Park 2) boating on the Chesapeake 3) museums in DC. I feel like those were the activities that made us feel like we were getting the most out of the DC area. Some of these ideas are a long day trip or overnighter.
The beach! Rehoboth and Chincoteague are our "local" favorites
Check KidFriendlyDc.com for bi-weekly activity ideas, they are updated for weekends and weekdays.
Great Country Farms, Cox Farms, Clark's Ellioak Farm or similar for animals, hayrides etc.
Train stuff - Strasburg Pa or Ellicott City or Baltimore
Colonial and Civil War stuff - Claude Moore Colonial Farm (particularly on Market Faire days) Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, Fort McHenry, Abe Lincoln's Cottage, Monticello, Williamsburg of course, St. Michaels.
Great Falls, Rock Creek Park, Westmoreland State Park
NVRA waterparks - Volcano Island etc. Lots of waterslide and spray park fun without the giant theme park or long drive.

Our family is putting together a mixed bag of things fun, purposeful/charitable, and educational that we can put into action this summer. I've generated about 20 ideas but would love to hear some from you. Our children are 11, 9, and 5. Thanks!!
