I do all sorts of things for myself (investments, cooking, easy home repairs, cleaning), but as another poster noted, I am paying so I will have time to spend on other things I care about. Yes, I want my kids to know how to do things for themselves, but I also want them to understand that sometimes it's OK to hand tasks off, too.

Who cares OP. If I want to pay someone and have the means to tickle my feet for 4 hours, what is it to you. Geez.

The helpless privileged class. You all need to watch "A Day without a Mexican."

OP, i had a proud moment last week when my dishwasher started pouring water into the space under the sink. I googled the model, downloaded the manual, figured out the problem and fixed it. Took about half an hour, but at plumbers' rates, I figure I saved a couple hundred bucks.

If I had the money, I would outsource whatever I wanted In order to make my life more comfortable. I see nothing wrong in someone doing that.

Hire a CPA. Hire an attorney. Get a real estate agent. Get an interior decorator. Get a wedding planner. Call the plumber. Call the babysitter. Get a tutor. Get a private sports coach.

Can anybody around here do anything themselves any more? Everyone here seems to think they are entitled to get expert help for every life situation.

What happened to being self-reliant? Or getting help from family and friends? Or getting help by asking a question on DCUM?

And then we have threads about being poor and not being able to save! It is because you are paying for expert advice too much!!!

Does anybody agree with me?

No. People who need to find someone often research through the internet. It makes sense that people would come to a board like this to seek information. There is quite a bit of knowledge on this board.

OP, you have to realize that a lot of the posters on here aren't your average people, and would rather spend money than attempt to work something out themselves. The most ridiculous thing I've seen is someone who wanted to hire someone to find their child a preschool. Really?

I see lots of posts telling people they don't need CPAs to do their taxes, or financial planners, etc.

Babysitters and real estate agents seem like odd examples of things you could do yourself though.

I have too much at stake to manage my investments.

I learned there are things I am good at - and things I realized over time are too risky to dabble in. I do not want to make those mistakes again.

I also value my free time. I would much prefer to play w my kids than rip a zipper out of a dress and replace it.

So teach you child how to rip out a zipper-- you can spend quality time with your kids while still teaching them valuable life skills.
