For us the pretend play took a while but it did kick in. We assume it helped because we could see the incremental progress but of course it's always hard to tell what would otherwise have happened!

It worked for us. My DS was very young and it was the first therapy he did. Between OT and social/motor group he was doing it mutliple times a week. And we trained to do it at home. We were all in for over a year.
It's the reason my son and I have an emotional connection and I see some intrinsic social motivation in him.
