I actually think you are very correct. They are both big money schools (beautiful campuses up on a hill, behind a fence in a posh part of town with top of the line sports facilities). They both have a focus on the arts and small class sizes. While Maret has recently become come more of an academic powerhouse and Field has catered to kids who might not do well at the more high pressure schools, I think that will change very soon. More wealthy parents will put pressure on Field to compete with the Big 3 and it will loose some of its funkiness. Maret used to be pretty funky too. With the intense competition to get into these top schools, there is definitely room for another "Big 3-type" school and I believe the powers that be have designated Field to be that school.
