When I traveled through Europe recently, I don't see a lot of items marked as "Gluten free." I could certainly avoid things like pasta and order potatoes/rice, but I found it hard to tell, for example, if a sauce was thickened with flour. I am not that sensitive to Gluten, so I probably did not try as hard as I could.

The glutenfreemom link has good info. Good to know I don't have to speak French or Italian to explain what celiac means. A card will do that for me.

Kind of an aside, but my wife is a celiac and I was curious about this myself.

I was looking around and a few websites claim that Ireland has some of the highest rates of Celiacs in the world.

My wife traveled to Italy pretty recently and said most places were pretty aware, and also that grocery stores had lots of stuff.

I'm a celiac and made up restaurant cards when I travelled to France, Germany and Spain several years ago that described my dietary needs in those languages. It worked pretty well. You can find these translated cards on the internet - Just google.

From what I understand it is very easy to find GF meals in England because it is much more understood there than it has been in the US.

One of the celiac groups had a business card as to what you could and could not eat that you could give to the wait staff to give to the chef. I'm sure you could get it translated.

However, unless you have an actual condition like celiac, I really wouldn't stress too much.

Anyone know if there is an app or list or something for me to search for restaurants that have gluten free menu for any part of EUROPE. ENGLAND?
Are they big on this over there?
