Subject: wall system without built ins?
I also just put up the Ikea besta system around our fireplace. 2 floor to ceiling units on either side of the fireplace with doors on the bottom cabinets and the top is open shelving. There is a shelf right above the fire place for the cable box/video game console and the tv is wall-mounted above. We put crown molding on the top to tie it all together. Exactly what we did after doing a ton of research, including for kitchen cabinets. We got an Ikea Besta system and had our handy man "build" it into our basement wall. We use it for toys and the TV. The system cost around $700 plus a couple hundred in installation, verses the $7,000 that a carpenter quoted us. I'd post a picture here but can't figure out how to do it.

Actually it looks great and serves the purpose it is supposed to serve which is store toys, books, etc in our family room. It is much higher quality than Ikea.
And 4 times the price

Actually it looks great and serves the purpose it is supposed to serve which is store toys, books, etc in our family room. It is much higher quality than Ikea.

We have the Billy shelves from Ikea, and have put molding along the sides to give it a built-in look. We get a lot of compliments from visitors.

You can probably still work with stock cabinets. Some come in lower heights (30" is standard for a table/baking height), and even if not the base of a cabinet is normally for the toe kick, which you could just cut off. Or just get IKEA cabinet boxes and don't add legs.
If you go the IKEA cabinet box route there are also a number of companies that sell custom doors for the boxes. Semihandmade is a good example of this, but there are other options too. http://www.semihandmadedoors.com

I've been looking at the Ikea Billy system. The bookcases come in a 16" depth now which makes for much better storage for games and toys especially paired with doors.

Where would you buy a wall system (for books/tv/toys) if you didn't quite want to spend the money on built ins? I think I'm looking for cabinets, drawers and shelves. I've looked at IKEA, Room and Board, Crate and Barrel and West Elm. I have simple contemporary taste, but I want great storage. My two favorites are the Addison wall system at Room and Board (probably too expensive for what it is) and the IKEA Hemnes tv stand with bookcases (not exactly the right look or enough storage).
