Are you talking same caliber or safety? I think U.Chicago is the only elite elite school in the midwest, although Northwestern comes the closest. But there are plenty of good but not top 10 schools out there worth checking out, like Michigan and Wisconsin.

I would do UofM, Rose Holman, CWRU, and Carnegie Melon.

Although Michigan/Indiana/NE Ohio/Western PA might be a different long weekend than the Illinois/Wisconsin trip.

+1 Pitt and CMU can be done on a weekend from DC.

Maybe Lake Forest in Chicago if you are open to a SLAC?

Thinking about some "safer" schools, assuming your kid wants medium to large universities (and also assuming you are driving?):

Miami (OH)
Pitt

Chicago has lots of fun stuff to do. Great museums, restaurants, shopping, beautiful lake and river views and architecture. If you make it to Madison there are good restaurants and lake views also. Drive up Observatory Drive overlooking the lake heading towards the Lakeshore dorms. Beautiful.

Washington University in St. Louis. The facilities and dorms are great and my son and his friends are very happy there and intellectually stimulated.

We will be doing one of these over spring break and so far only have three schools on the list (Northwestern, UChicago, and Notre Dame.). Any other ideas?
